Political Science

About the Department

Dr. Chris AC-Ogbonna

The Social Sciences at Phoenix University Agwada constitute the systematic study of human society, behavior, institutions, and interactions across economic, political, and global domains. The Department houses three interrelated degree programs: EconomicsInternational Relations and Diplomacy, and Political Science. These disciplines share a common foundation in the scientific analysis of how individuals, groups, states, and non-state actors organize themselves to manage resources, exercise power, resolve conflicts, and pursue collective welfare.

As an interdisciplinary hub, the Department recognizes that economic behavior, political governance, and international affairs are deeply intertwined. Economics studies how people manage scarce resources to achieve optimal outcomes; Political Science examines the exercise of power, governance structures, and public administration; International Relations and Diplomacy focuses on interactions among states and global actors, including diplomacy, security, and international cooperation. Students are encouraged to take courses across all three programs, ensuring a well-rounded social science education.

The curriculum is built around core competencies: analytical thinking (deductive and inductive reasoning), qualitative and quantitative data analysis, evidence-based policy formulation, ethical judgment, and effective communication to diverse audiences. Team-teaching and modern technology are integrated into lecture delivery to foster cross-fertilization of ideas and discourage bias. In line with the Federal Government’s goal of increasing access to higher education in Nigeria and ensuring equity in the distribution of educational opportunities, the Department admits students from diverse states of the federation, promoting inclusivity and national integration.

Vision of the Department
