
In celebration of World Health Day 2025, Phoenix University Agwada, Nasarawa State, hosted an impactful Public Health Lecture under the distinguished leadership of Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Bala, FSSSN, FSA.
Held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the Shehu Tukur Auditorium, the event brought together key health experts and stakeholders, reinforcing the university’s commitment to advancing student and community well-being through awareness and education.
The event was chaired by Senator (Dr.) Abdullahi Adamu, CON, Turakin Keffi, Chairman, Board of Trustees of Phoenix University.
The Guest Speaker, Dr. Yahaya Baba Adamu, Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Center Keffi, delivered an enlightening lecture titled “Prevention and Management of Common Diseases in Tertiary Institutions.”
In his presentation, Dr. Adamu emphasized that tertiary institutions must adopt a multi-level disease prevention approach, including:
Primordial prevention: through policies and healthy campus design.
Primary prevention: involving health education, vaccination, and hygiene practices.
Secondary prevention: via regular screenings and prompt treatment.
Tertiary prevention: focusing on rehabilitation and long-term care.
He highlighted major health threats such as malaria, respiratory infections, STIs, mental health disorders, and non-communicable diseases like hypertension and diabetes — many of which are exacerbated by poor lifestyle habits, overcrowded conditions, and low awareness among students.
Special Guest of Honour, Dr. Gaza Gwamna, Honourable Commissioner for Health, Nasarawa State, commended the university for aligning with global health goals and fostering a culture of prevention and education.
The program, emceed by Ambassador Samuel Jimba, also emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among university administration, student unions, healthcare providers, and government bodies to build a resilient campus health system.
